We are always fascinated by an Indonesian traditional wedding, especially when the bride wears hijab. It is amazing that Indonesia is not only culturally rich but also a modest country.

Nalia Rifika, the oldest daughter of the family met the oldest son of the family, Delonika Yuki Eka Putra brought two different culture in Sumatera, Indonesia. Acehnese met Padangnese. It was a delightful and colorful blend of cultures.

The wedding was held in 3 days. First day was the ijab/akad on December 10, 2010 when the bride and the groom had the marriage agreement and officially a husband and wife. Simple white and pink 'kebaya' to embrace the beauty of the bride. A silver jewelry completed the look and matched the tone of her makeup and her dress. Meanwhile the groom wore white traditional tux or what we called it 'beskap'.

The day after on December 11, 2010 Fika and Delon had a reception with Aceh tradition. Aceh is one of the cultures in Indonesia that got a strong influence from Arab, Turkish and Indian descent. Hence, the bride will typically wears a strong color material accessorize with heavy gold jewelry. The bride will hold some heavy material on her head. This is where they place all the head jewelries. Then, the head jewelries will be pinned in one by one to the bride’s head. According to Fika, the weight of her head at the wedding could be more than 8 kilos. Must have been a lot of work.

Fika also got her palms and her feet drawn Mehndi or also know as henna. Mehndi is a skin decoration that common applied during ceremony. In addition Fika wore a heavy gold hand jewelry to sparkle the wedding dress.

The ceremony ended on December 12, 2010 in a Padangnese reception or also called a Minang tradition. Padang, West Sumatera is another part in Indonesia that gets a strong influence from Arab. Red and gold are two essential color we could find from this tradition.

The bride and the groom wore a bright red traditional blouse embroidered in gold. Wearing a heavy jewelry by the bride and the groom is also part of the tradition. Therefore, the appearance of the bride would be considered incomplete unless the bride wore a big gold crown in her head or known as 'suntiang'. It is a very important element for the bride. The highest layers of the suntiang is eleven while Fika was wearing 5-7 layers. Imagine how tall it could be if the layers were up to eleven layers. The gold net fabric nicely covered Fika’s head and neck. This wedding proved that wearing hijab can be traditionally stunning and also well covered.

These are some pictures that I (Mrs. Hanna Faridl) took from my end of the year holiday with my family. Some of them also was taken by my sister when she visited Turki. The cute thing is my sisters also tried to wear hijab during their visit to the market. A long turkish cape was certainly one of recomended items during winter. It makes your body warm and also nicely covered our body shape.

The rest are pictures of me posing as a tourist. I wore my cape coat and long sleeve shirt or sweater to keep my body warm. Boots or thigh high socks are my favorite to make my feet warm. To keep my ear and head nice and warm, most of the time I wore 'beanie'.

My sister and I also captured some muslimah with their beautiful hijab. Surprisingly, I met many stylish muslimah with hijab in Europe compared to United State. I found this quite shocking since I heard that in some countries in Europe example; France, we are not allowed to show our religious view. However, from this trip I had changed my point of view.

Unfortunately not all the hijabi sisters I met there allowed me to take their pictures. I got some rejection hence I canot share every beautiful sister I met there. Moreover sometime I also dont have the guts to ask. Well hopefully there will be next time for me to share more beautiful sisters with their hijab from around the world. Amen.
